HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK: Once you have properly formatted your submission, send it as an attachment to suckerliterary at gmail dot com
ABOUT YOUR SUBMISSION:
- Sucker is both a print and e-book literary magazine, and all authors retain FULL rights to their work. Multiple submissions are fine (and expected!). If your work has or will been featured elsewhere, please include that in your cover email with your piece.
- We currently do not pay our writers or staff members but hope to some day soon.
- Sucker‘s founding editor also happens to have a (several) day jobs and is a parent, so please be patient while we read your submissions. Expect a response within four months. Then you can start harassing us (and by us, I really mean me).
- Sucker will be increasing its staff and is always interested in talented writers and artists willing to assist (donate your time) with editing, layout, and design. Feel free to email us: suckerliterary at gmail dot com
- Sucker WILL NOT publish anything that is gratuitously violent, homophobic, or hateful. So don’t even try it.
If our editor sees potential in a piece, she will offer to mentor the writer through revisions. THIS DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT YOUR PIECE WILL BE PUBLISHED. But it sure means that you are thisclose! Feel free to email us for more details: suckerliterary at gmail dot com.

I have a question. You guidelines say that the author retains all rights. So do I understand that to mean that a piece can be posted on the author’s website at the same time as it is posted to your magazine. Or, must it remain exclusive for what period of time. Thank you.
As of now, we are not asking authors to give us exclusive rights.
Do you take reprints? I have a YA story that was published in a British slipstream anthology that is now out of print.
Hi, Yes we would consider reprints. Please provide the information about the anthology when you submit. Thanks!
Can you send your submission in the mail? Or do you want it submitted by online? If it is online, how would you go by that? Thanks !
Email submissions only. Send to suckerliterarymagazine at cox dot net (suckerliterarymagazine@cox.net) with the subject line SUBMISSION. Include your bio and summary of the piece. Let us know if it has been published elsewhere.
Quick question. Edgy. Dysfunctional family issues. Interested? You mention: “Hateful. So don’t even try it.” in your guidelines.
In the story, two sisters argue and tell each other they hate one another, there’s also some shoving and pulling hair…didn’t want to offend you by just sending it. Let me know! :))
~Candy (from She Writes)
Sounds PERFECT for us! Our concern in terms of “hateful” is anything that supports an anti-Semitic, homophobic, or racist theme that intends to hurt an entire group of individuals. Dysfunctional and edgy…right up our alley!
Hello,
Just wondering if you have a minimum word count?
Thank you!
Nope!
Hi,
One quick question: do you offer payment for stories at the moment?
We do not offer payment for stories as of this moment. Currently we are operating on a zero budget of money but a HUGE budget on time. : ) It is the founder’s dream to one day pay each writer for their story for a one time right to publish. We are working on the HOW of this as we speak.
Hello!
I just learned about Sucker magazine and am very excited that you have made a place to publish new YA authors. Will you allow more than one submission from the same person? I have two very short stories I would like to submit. The combined word count is under 1500. Thank you!
Multiple submissions to us are fine. Looking forward to reading your work!
Question: Is it acceptable to use swears in a character’s dialogue, or should one avoid it?
Swears are absolutely fine. : )
How old do you have you have to be to become a staff member? Because I’m only sixteen, but would love to be involved!
Hi Briana, That’s great that you are interested in helping us out. Please send us an email at suckerliterarymagazine@cox.net and let us know how you’d like to help out (editing, art and layout, etc). Right now we are going through our submissions and collecting the stories that we think will make it into the first issue. We really need some readers to take a look at submissions, so if that interests you, let us know in your email. Another major way to help is to spread the word to other teens–they are our target audience. Thanks! -The Editors at Sucker
Question:
If we can help out look on the magazine like you mentioned before ( as in reading over submissions, etc.) can we still submit entries or are we excluded from that?
Yes! : )
PS:
Are you still looking for an illustration for a cover for your first issue?
We are currently looking for artist to submit artwork to correspond with our stories. If you are interested, please submit a sample of your work. All submissions should include a sucker style lollypop in the image. If you submit photography, make sure it has illustrative quality to it and isn’t just a portrait of someone. We are interested in showcasing artists.
Do you respond to all submissions even if the answer is no to both publishing and mentoring?
Yes. We try our best to respond to everyone. I admit we have been overwhelmed with submissions but I think we have replied to everyone. I have a few left to get to, though. But our goal is to not leave writers hanging.
Three questions:
1. Are you interested at all in (well-written) non-edgy pieces?
2. What about pieces with spiritual content?
3. Are you open to a serialized YA book?
Thanks very much.
Andrea
Hi A. Eller-
1. We do have a specific focus on “edgy”. Read our first issue to learn more about that.
2. Sure- no preaching or proselytizing
3. Thank you, but probably not.
-H
Are you intrested in flash fiction?
Sure!
Hi, just checking to see what kind of deadline there is for the current round of submissions.
I’m an artist as well, so let me know about that deadline.
Also, is there a possibility to submit artwork to go specifically with the piece I submit (so long as it adheres to the guidelines)?
Send along your work to us. We can take a look at it. If we like your work, we may ask you to create something specific for the stories or even the cover. Send it along!
The art deadline is the same as the fiction deadline. I will make that more clear on the blog and Tweet that out as well. If you could take a look at our first issue and then maybe send a few samples to us, that would be great!
Here’s my portfolio site. Most of the work I’ve been doing is in illustration, but I think my style could work with YA as well. I’m pretty flexible. Let me know what you think.

HI, I write adult content about a married couple. Is that of any interest?
We publish YA only.
DO you accept horror submissions–like those written by Vivian Vande
Velde?
I am not familiar with Vivian Vande. Horror is not something I gravitate towards, personally, but we are open to different genres as a literary journal.
Hi Hannah,
A question about my proposed piece: the piece itself is not homophobic, but it deals with a community that is. Is this still okay to submit?
Thank you!
Yes. We just don’t want to read/publish pieces that support or encourage bigotry of any kind.
Hi. I just finished the second volume and loved it. There were a few stories that resonated with me, and made me sad when i remembered I couldn’t go back and finish them because they weren’t actual books. When is the approximate date for the next round of submissions? I’d love to apply. Thank you!
We will be have a special 24 hour open door day for volume 3. Stay tuned for details!
Do you guys have scholarships that you give out too?
No we don’t. Sorry.
